Deputy Director

Strategic Healthcare IT Advanced Research Projects on Security (SHARPS)

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks a Deputy Director for the Strategic Healthcare IT Advanced Research Projects on Security (SHARPS) (www.sharps.org) SHARPS is a newly-formed research program supported by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and led by the University of Illinois. SHARPS will focus on reducing security and privacy barriers to the meaningful use of health information technology by way of research that leads to the discovery, development, and deployment of security and privacy for health IT.

SHORT DESCRIPTION SUMMARIZING POSITION FUNCTIONS

The Deputy Director will be responsible for management assistance to the Director (Principal Investigator) of SHARPS. The Deputy Director will play a critical role in an interdisciplinary and multi-institutional team on a high-profile mission to improve health care for the nation. This team includes eleven of the leading computer science departments and medical schools and is advised by a distinguished committee of industry and government leaders.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide effective implementation of organizational and administrative objectives of the Director and successful performance to and compliance with all of the requirements of the SHARPS project and contract.

  • Serve as chief administrative liaison with the HHS Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) which has oversight for SHARPS (http://bit.ly/ctLWNf), the faculty and staff of UIUC, the SHARPS researchers and their teams at eleven other institutions, and the advisors, partners, and stakeholders associated with SHARPS composed of leading researchers and practitioner in this emerging field.

  • Administer the budget and provide financial reports as required.

  • Oversee and coordinate efforts to prepare annual progress reports as well as ad-hoc report and information requests.

  • Manage SHARPS-dedicated staff.

  • Serve as chief administrative liaison with all university partners, federal sponsors, and advisory committees of SHARPS.

  • Identify technology transition opportunities and establish relationships with senior personnel from industry, government, non-profit, and international organizations to foster collaboration between SHARPS and outside organizations and grow the SHARPS effort.

  • Provide general management of all project support tools (Basecamp, Highrise, Groove, and Microsoft Project).

  • Schedule and/or oversee scheduling and follow-through of required meetings (ONC, Federal Steering Committee, Executive Committee, PAC, and the Stakeholder Coordination Committee).

  • Market and provide public relations support for SHARPS through website development, printed materials, TV, radio, online media and representation at relevant trade and professional conferences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree is required (advanced degree is preferred).

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with and support researchers and industry professionals.

  • Minimum of 3-5 and desirability for 5-7 years experience in technical and/or administrative management of large scope multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research projects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with specific agencies such as HHS, ONC, National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

  • General knowledge of, and strong interest in, the privacy and security of health information.

  • Experience in academic and/or research administration, healthcare industries or software development and training, C-level executive leadership and management, project management, technical product development, and organizational use of social media tools.

SALARY: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience

APPOINTMENT STATUS: This is a 12-month, 100percent regular academic professional with applicable University Benefits.
