Call for Applications: Co-Editor in Chief

Health Services Research (HSR) is a top ranked journal that provides those engaged in research, public policy formulation, and health services management with the latest findings, methods, and thinking on important policy and practice issues. An outlet for the publication of the latest and best research on financing, organization, delivery, and outcomes of health services, HSR allows researchers, practitioners and students alike to exchange ideas that will help to improve health care policy and the health services provided to individuals, communities and systems.  HSR publishes six regular issues each year plus two special or theme issues.  HSR is published in partnership with Wiley-Blackwell by the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET), the 501(c)(3) affiliate of the American Hospital Association (AHA), whose mission is to transform health care through research and education.  HSR is an official journal of AcademyHealth, the professional home for health services researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners, and a leading, non-partisan resource for the best in health research and policy.  For more information on the journal, please visit: www.hsr.org.

Summary

The Co-Editor in Chief, in collaboration with one other Co-Editor in Chief, ensures that the journal's purpose is achieved by overseeing the management and production of the journal.  The Co-Editor in Chief also provides leadership to the Editorial Board, Senior Associate Editors (SAEs) and Managing Editor.

Responsibilities

The Co-Editor in Chief shall furnish the following services and is responsible for reaching agreement pertaining to the division of labor, shared and independent responsibilities:

  • Working with the SAEs, oversee the peer review process for submitted articles until a final decision is made;

  • Working with the Editorial team and HRET, select topics for special and theme issues and assist HRET in contracting with agencies interested in commissioning special/theme issues or special sections;

  • Maintain timely manuscript review process and turnaround times for regular and special/theme issue articles using Manuscript Central;

  • Communicate regularly with the editorial team, editorial board, SAEs, authors, and reviewers as well as guest editors for special/theme issues;

  • Write or secure a foreword or editorial for each issue;

  • Maintain and establish production guidelines and schedules with Wiley-Blackwell Publishing;

  • Provide Wiley-Blackwell Publishing with manuscripts for each copy according to the established schedule;

  • Ensure copyright transfer forms are signed and received from contributors prior to publication of articles in HSR;

  • Review and approve author disclosure forms prior to being sent to Wiley-Blackwell Publishing;

  • Secure or instruct authors to obtain written permission for use of articles in both print and electronic form for all copyright material published in HSR;

  • Provide overall editorial direction and management of final manuscripts in conjunction with the services provided by Wiley-Blackwell Publishing;

  • Correspond with and seek approval from HRET on all business administration matters;

  • Manage page count to be submitted per regular and special issue;

  • Manage the workflow and allocation of manuscripts to SAEs;

  • Communicate expectations about roles and responsibilities for special issue guest editors;

  • Develop Editorial Board policy, manage term limits and productivity and appoint new Board members and reviewers on an ongoing basis;

  • With coordination from HRET, conduct annual assessment and performance review of  Managing Editor;

  • Monitor key performance indicators of manuscript submission and review process;

  • Lead the journal into innovative areas that contribute to building the health services research field; and

  • Represent the journal at conferences or meetings.

Qualifications

  • Doctorate in health services research or a related social science or medical degree with additional graduate-level training in health services research;

  • Excellent record of publication in academic, peer-reviewed journals;

  • Established relationships with health care leaders, institutions and organizations;

  • Experience in or the willingness to work with current electronic publishing technology, ScholarOne Manuscript Central;

  • Extensive review experience for peer-reviewed journals; and

  • Demonstrated management experience and organizational skills

Measures of Success

The Co-Editor in Chief is accountable to HRET Leadership for the following measures of success---Satisfaction of readers, editorial board on the manuscript submission and review process, satisfaction by HRET, high impact factors for the journal and high performance in turnaround times.

Compensation

The Co-Editor in Chief receives an annual stipend
